Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE)

Conditions for Sitting for CSEE

  • On the first ocassion of entry school candidate must enter and sit for atleast xxxxxxxxxxx subjects which must include atleast one subject in each of the following:

    • Civics

    • Kiswahili

    • Foreign Languages

    • Mathematics

    • Social Sciences or Technical Subjects

    • Natural sciences or commercial or Home economics



  • No candidate may enter for more than ten subjects


  • Private candidates for the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination must enter and sit for atleast xxxxxxxxxxx , two of which must be xxxxxxxxx and xxxxxxxxxxx. Normally a private candidate will not be allowed to enter for subjects in xxxxxx unless she/he can prove that she/he is taking a full course in practical work in a recogised laboratory. Documentary evidence to this effect from the head of institution conducting the practical course must be submitted with the entry form.


  • Private candidates who have not completed form xxxxxx in a recognised Secondary School but who wish to appear for the CSEE must first sit for and pass a qualifying test in xxxxxxxx. Those who have completed Form xxxx in a recognised school will not be required to sit for qualifying test. Documentary evidence from the head of school to the effect that the candidate was in full attendance up to and including form 3 must accompany the application form, under special circumstances the council may grant permission to private candidates whos academic qualifications are equivalent to or above Form 3.


  • Candidates who already hold a Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent may appear for one or more subjects in a subsequant examination as private candidates.


  • Candidates are not allowed to appear for the Certificate of Secondary Education and the Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination or Teacher Education Examinations ath the same time.

Examinable Subjects CSEE

Examination Results and Conditions for the Award of Certificate of Secondary Education

  • Examination results will be indicated in letter grades as follows:

    • A indicating Excellent

    • B indicating Very Good

    • C indicating Good

    • D indicating Satisfactory

    • E indicating Fail

  • NOTE:
    • Grades: A, B, C, and D are passes while grades F is Fail

    • Grades: A, B, C are credits


  • NECTA Criteria of Awarding Divisions:
    A candidate who sits for CSEE examination is awarded divisions I, II, III, IV or 0 depending on meeting the following conditions:

    • DIVISION ONE (I):
      Passes in at least 7 subjects which must include at least one subject in each of the following subject groups:-

      • Civics

      • Kiswahili

      • Foreign Languages

      • Mathematics

      • Social Sciences or Technical Subjects

      • Natural sciences or commercial or Home economics


    • Passes at grades A or B or C in at least five subjects.

      Reaches an aggregate of not more than 17 points taking the candidates' best seven subjects.


    • DIVISION TWO (II):
      Passes in at least 7 subjects which must include at least one subject in each of the following subject groups:-

      • Civics

      • Kiswahili

      • Foreign Languages

      • Mathematics

      • Social Sciences or Technical Subjects

      • Natural sciences or commercial or Home economics


    • Passes at grades A or B or C in at least four subjects.

      Reaches an aggregate of not more than 21 points taking the candidates' best seven subjects.

    • DIVISION THREE (III):
      Passes in at least seven subjects one of which must be at grade A or B or C

    • OR

      Passes in at least five subjects two of which must be at grade A or B or C.

      AND

      Reaches an aggregate of not more than 25 points taking the candidates' best seven subjects.

    • DIVISION FOUR (IV):
      Passes in at least one subject at grade A, B or C.

    • OR

      Passes in two subjects at grade D.

    • ZERO:
      Does not fulfil the conditions for awards of the above Divisions (DIV 1-IV).
